Matt

Physics. Math Methods & Junior Mathematics/Science

Founder & Head Teacher

Matt completed his undergraduate degree in 2015 at the University of Queensland. Since then, Matt has been teaching in Queensland schools & has completed further qualifications in Mathematics and Physics. Matt has also completed a Master of Educational Studies (Mathematics & Psychology) at the University of Queensland in 2022. 

Matt is passionate about all things STEM and founded Serious About Education to provide students with a unique individualised approach to learning about STEM. He is fun, approachable and prides himself on building excellent rapport with his students. 

Joel

Specialist Math, Math Methods & Junior Math Teacher

Joel currently lives without a dog, which almost meant we couldn’t have him on board haha. Nonetheless, he has been a Mathematics, Science and Engineering teacher since 2013 having worked in rural and urban, government and private education. 

Joel completed a Master of Educational Studies (Leadership) in 2019 through the University of Queensland.

In 2022, he was selected as the Raybould Tutorial Fellow at the University of Queensland and had the opportunity to lecture and engage in research.

After finishing up as the Head of Mathematics for a mid-sized private school in Brisbane, Joel and his family hit the road as digital nomads. He really loves seeing students connect the dots between topics in Mathematics as well as seeing the links between mathematics and practical problems

Sarah

Mathematical Methods and General Mathematics Teacher

Sarah is an amazing addition to the Serious About Education team. Sarah has a lot of experience working as a Mathematics teacher, in the classroom for many years as well as private tutoring.

She takes pride in working with a range of students from those struggling to pass in subjects like Mathematical Methods, all the way through to students who want to be excelling to achieve high results for some of the highest ATARs.

When she is not teaching, Sarah is human mum, a dog mum and loves spending time with her husband and friends.

Cameron

Physics and General Mathematics Teacher

Over the past decade, Cam has taught in both state and independent schools. Taking an active role with the QCAA through confirmation and external exam creation allows him to adequately prepare students for their assessments. 

Cam’s experience as a Mechanical Engineer, involved in manufacturing a number of well-known products, enables him to interweave real-life situations to make complex concepts accessible.

Brendan

Physics and Mathematical Methods Teacher

Brendan has been a Senior Maths, Senior Physics and Junior Maths/Science teacher for over 27 years. He is currently Assistant Principal at Shalom College in Bundaberg where he continues to share his passions of Maths and Science at all levels with his students.

His qualifications include a Bachelor of Physics, Graduate Diploma in Teaching (Secondary), Postgraduate Certificate in Educational Leadership and Masters in Education Leadership. Outside of school, Brendan enjoys most things outdoors particularly tennis, surfing and rugby union. He has tutored students over an extended period of time and is excited to join the team at SA Education team.  

Chris

General Mathematics Teacher

As a lover of mathematics, Chris completed a mathematics degree and found great use for it in education. Chris has taught in Queensland high school’s for just over 5 years now, but is driven by his desire to support students in an individual format. Chris has worked in various settings and has a strong passion for middle schools mathematics.

He has also been teaching General Mathematics in the ATAR system with great success. He is an avid lover of dogs, a proud husband to his partner Bec and a highly-valued tutor with Serious About Education. 

Declan

Physics and Mathematical Methods Teacher

Declan has been a Physics and Mathematical Methods teacher for the past 5 years and has achieved amazing results with his students. He has worked across a two main schools in Queensland to push students to achieve some of the best results in his selected subjects.

Declan also takes great pride in supporting a range of different student abilities and has a strong passion for enjoyment in learning. In his spare time, you will catch Declan in the pool swimming faster than most fish. We hear breaststroke is his best stroke.

Thomas

Mathematical Methods & General Mathematics Teacher

After high school, Thomas pursued a Bachelor of Science in Computational Science and Mathematics followed by an Honours Degree in Mathematics and a Graduate Diploma of Education at the University of Queensland from 2012 to 2017.

Since then he has worked as a private math tutor, relief teacher and external marker, with a focus on improving student understanding of how things work and link together in the content he teaches. He likes to spend his spare time reading and playing boardgames. 

Ruth

Physics, Chemistry & Mathematical Methods Teacher

Ruth has been teaching Maths Methods, Physics and Chemistry for 17 years and working for SA Education for the previous 12 months. Ruth is employed by the QCAA as a lead confirmer for Physics and as a lead assessor for the External Exams in Physics and Maths Methods, which puts her in a great place to support Queensland students, particularly in Grade 11 & 12.

She has a background in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science as well as a postgraduate degrees in Mathematics and Physics. Along with teaching, Ruth’s favourite things in life include SCUBA diving, travelling and her cats.

Lauren

Specialist Mathematics, Mathematical Methods & General Mathematics Teacher

Lauren completed her degree in Engineering at the QUT in 2007 and has worked in a diverse range of fields as an engineer. Her career has taken her around Australia and overseas both as a civilian engineer and as an Engineering Officer in the Australian Army.

Lauren pursued further studies in mathematics and completed her post-graduate qualification in Learning and Teaching at the University of Southern Queensland in 2014. Since then, Lauren has been teaching in Queensland schools and providing exceptional tutoring.  Lauren is super passionate about supporting women in STEM and is Serious about STEM Education!

Jess

Biology & Junior Mathematics/Science Teacher

After her dogs, Jessica’s next greatest love is biology. During her undergraduate Science degree majoring in Microbiology and Immunology, Jess found her passion for teaching and decided to pursue it long-term. 

She has been teaching as a secondary high school teacher in Brisbane for the past 5 years as a Senior Biology teacher, and has also enjoyed teaching junior mathematics and science.

She loves working with her students to achieve their learning goals in a fun and supportive way, and has been involved in the writing some of the textbooks that students all around the state are using to achieve success in Biology. Jess is an excellent tutor for SA Education.

Kris

Specialist Mathematics & Mathematical Methods Teacher

Having graduated from school in 2002, Murali completed a Bachelors in Civil Engineering in India and received 80%. He has always passionate about maths with family who all have a passion for the subject. He came to Australia to do his Masters in Environmental Engineering. 

While completing his masters, he tutored and completed workshops for University students studying an array of Mathematics subjects.

From here his passion for teaching grew and he completed a teaching degree in 2013. Murali now has experience teaching all levels of Mathematics and also marks external examinations for the QCAA for Specialist Math. He loves maths and looks forward to teaching with SA Education.

Annie

Chemistry and Junior Mathematics/Science Teacher

After completing a Bachelor of Education with distinction in 2019, Annie went on to teach senior chemistry, junior maths, junior science and a STEM academy program in high school. In early 2022 Annie decided to enrol in further tertiary studies in biology and biochemistry, and extended her teaching practice to include presenting science shows and workshops to primary school students.

Annie has over 6 years experience tutoring children and young adults and has worked in a variety of educational spaces. Outside of teaching, Annie is an avid animal lover and enjoys nothing more than spending her spare time with her two dogs and two horses. 

Jakob

Chemistry and Junior Mathematics/Science Teacher

Having graduated as an Engineer in 2012, Jakob initially worked in this field before pursing a teaching career in 2018 specialising in Chemistry and Mathematics. He has taught across both QLD and SA education systems and will be working on the road in 2023 while travelling with his young family through WA and NT. Jakob enjoys mountain biking, cricket and spending time with his kids. 

Jess

Biology & Chemistry Teacher

Jess completed her degree in Biomedical science in 2011 and her Graduate Diploma of Education- Secondary in 2013. Jess has taught middle years science, mathematics and senior biology, chemistry and general mathematics at a variety of public and private schools in South East Queensland over the past 10 years. She also works for the QCAA as a confirmer and exam marker for biology. Jess has a real passion for biology and chemistry and loves to share this with her students. 

Jess has two beautiful little girls and a cavoodle named Milo and enjoys spending time with them when she is not online tutoring.

Koko

Physics, Chemistry & Mathematical Methods Teacher

Koko is an experienced teacher and tutor, proficient across science, mathematics and humanities subjects. She tutors because she particularly enjoy helping students build improved understanding and confidence in the material they are studying. Koko develops excellent professional relationships with her students and enjoys helping them work out the right pathways to move forward and improve. She is able to pinpoint areas of improvement and work with students to build skills and confidence. 

When Koko is not teaching, she takes particular interest in studying the stars, baking and spending time with her dog. 

Ollie

The Face of Serious About Education & Good Boy

Ollie, the face of Serious About Education! Ollie was just as passionate about STEM having been diagnosed with an aggressive form of cancer. His treatment and care from his veterinary oncology team was proof of the powers of evidence-based science and STEM-based technology. Although no longer with us, Ollie would be super proud of his dad and the services that he is able to provide to students all around Australia. He was and always will be the face of Serious About Education and the reason that it started.
